Efficiency improvement of EDFAs by insertion of an isolator within the active fiber

Abstract

Even though high pump efficiencies are predicted for erbium fibers with gain optimized fiber designs3,2, most of the pump photons are lost to amplified spontaneous emission (ASE). The backward traveling ASE is comparable with the pump power at the input end of the amplifier and will saturate the gain in this fiber section.
