Multihundredwatt CO laser power delivery through chalogenide glass fibers

Abstract

In high-power laser usage such as material processing, fiber-based optical power delivery is eagerly awaited for improving efficiency and flexibility of the process. In the infrared region, glass fiber-based high-power delivery is much more promising for the 5-μm band CO laser than for the 10.6-μm CO2 laser, because the optical transmission loss in the glass rapidly increases as the wavelength becomes longer, owing to multiphonon absorption.
