Limits of solitoti transmission in optical fibers caused by the frequency noise of pulse sources

Abstract

For practical soli ton-based communication systems, it is strongly expected that the available soliton pulses can be generated from laser diodes (LDs). A problemis that LDs (without external cavities) have relatively large frequency (FM) noise, which makes the utility of LDs as soliton pulse sources more difficult. In this paper, we show that the FM noise of lasers will cause jitter in pulse arrival times and make a limit on the bit rate distance product in soliton transmission systems, which is similar to the Gordon- Haus effect.1
