Abstract
For any practical solid-state laser design, full utilization of the highly efficient codoped scandium garnet laser materials, such as Cr:Nd:YSGG,1 demands knowledge of the concomitant thermal properties. In particular, the values of the thermal expansion coefficient αL and the change of refractive index with respect to temperature dn/dT are required for thermal lensing calculations. Recently, we measured the normalized heating parameter χ (defined as the heat generated/stored energy at 1.06 μm) and thermal lensing of various codoped scandium garnets2,3 in comparison with Nd:YAG. In general, the gallium garnets exhibited a shorter thermal focal length than their aluminum garnet counterparts in similar pumping conditions.
