Abstract

The successful demonstration of a room temperature Tm:YVO4 laser was reported recently.1 Significant features such as (1) large bandwidth (6.25 nm FHWM) and large absorption coefficient (14.5 cm−1) for the 800-nm pump band, (2) the broad laser emission from 1.92 to 1.96 µm where water absorption bands exist, suggest it as a candidate for a compact LD pumped laser for medical use. Spectroscopic measurement of Tm3+-doped YVO4 to identify the laser parameters has not been reported; we report here some later results of its spectroscopic measurement and the stimulated emission cross-section.
