Abstract
High-power single-spatial-mode diode lasers are needed as pump sources for erbium-doped fiber amplifiers. Optimal coupling requires that the source lateral spot size closely match the single-mode fiber spot size. Stable single-mode power from ridge waveguide lasers (3.0-μm spot width) is limited to 180 mW.1 Large-spot- size (5-μm) single-mode operation can be obtained by flaring strongly positive index-guided devices.2 Phase-locked resonant arrays of negative index guides (antiguides) have demonstrated very high coherent power levels,3 yet coupling into single-mode fibers is nontrivial due to very large aperture width (40-80 μm).
