Abstract

A number of mode-locking techniques have been demonstrated for the Ti:sapphire laser. Most studies, however, have concentrated on the steady-state characteristics and relatively less attention has been paid to the pulse forming dynamics. Earlier Goodberlet et al. showed that their self-starting additive- pulse mode-locked (AFM) Ti:sapphire laser evolved from mode beating fluctuations to mode-locked operation in ≈200 µs. For a cw passively mode-locked Ti:sapphire/HITCI laser, Ishida et al.2 reported that the pulse train rapidly built up with a time constant of ≈200 µs and reached the steady state on a time scale of milliseconds to seconds. In this work, we report, for the first time to our knowledge, the temporal and spectral evolution of a cw passively mode-locked Ti:sapphire/DDl laser.
