Simultaneous compensation of solition attenuation and self-frequency shift in amplifying fibers

Abstract

The extensive research in the field of soliton-based optical communications has allowed the transmission of relatively long pulses over many thousands of kilometers1 by the employment of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers. However, the achievement of ≈100-Gbit/s bandwidth requires the utilization of picosecond and even shorter soli tons. In that range of duration the soliton parameters are influenced mainly by the fiber background attenuation, soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS)/ and by the coherent interaction with the inverted rare-earth ion system.
