Abstract

The self-mode-locked Ti: sapphire laser,1 with its wide tunability and high quantum efficiency, has proved itself to be a more versatile source of short pulses than the older colliding pulse mode-locked (CPM) laser. The noise characteristics of a self-mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser need to be fully understood to utilize this laser in many ultrafast optical experiments. Since the CPM laser has in the past been the standard for such experiments, we compare the noise spectra of the two lasers here to demonstrate yet another advantage of the Ti:Al2O3 laser.2
