Determination of the structure and density of silver colloid particles by second-harmonic generation

Abstract

A novel type of silver colloid, MEILF (metal liquidlike film), has been reported, to form as a thin (several μm) layer at the interface between water and denser organic solvents (chloroform, methylene chloride) when silver ions are reduced in the presence of certain additives.1 As its name suggests, this film exhibits macroscopic liquid like properties, such as exhibited when poured, stirred, or pierced. This film is also smooth and shows strong specular reflection of incident light. Due to the fact that the films are only stable when kept at their native liquid-liquid interface, MELLFs have not been amenable to many surface studies, and their structure has not been reliably established.
