Abstract

Overground wires occasionally cause serious helicopter accident& because the pilot could not See them clearly. A conventional imaging system could not provide their image even on a clear day, because of their small contrast to the background. To avoid serious accidents and to achieve safe operation of helicopters against Stich obstacles, ·we have developed an obstacle warning lidar (OWL) system using LD-pumped Q-switched Nd:YAG lasers. The system could give warning signals to the flight crew when approaching overground wires with operation time enough to avoid them. Our ultimate aim is to build a high reliability airborne OWL system.
