Abstract
The remote determination of air data with optical techniques has been conducted by a compact heterodyne system using a diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser (1.06 µm). Experience gained with stable solid-state lasers1.was extended to higher power levels, and close to quantum-noise limited operation was achieved. Wind velocity and turbulence measurements were made and calculations were used to extrapolate the system needs for an optical air data system for high performance aircraft at all altitudes.
