Abstract

Optical damage thresholds reported for frequency doubling 1.06-μm light in KTiOPO4 (KTP) range from 1 to >30 GW/cm2. The damage mechanism of KTP crystals discussed involves the formation of gray tracks, or thin regions of darkened material, which are dichroic and preferentially absorb light whose electric vector lies along the z-axis. Gray track damage is attributed to Ti3+ centers developing in KTP.
