Abstract

While adding titanium to synthetic sapphire has a relatively long history in making colored gemstone materials, the first serious efforts leading to more understanding of material aspects of incorporation of titanium ion into sapphire did not occur until 1983. The interest in the subject was triggered by Moulton’s1 disclosure of the lasing potential of such material combinations.
