Abstract
A multi-layer waveguide that enhances counterpropagating surface normal second-harmonic generation (SNSHG) has been reported.1,2 The design consists of alternating λ2ω/2 layers of materials with high and low χ(2) which we refer to as the generating and spacing layers, respectively. We have modeled the loss mechanisms in such structures and find that insufficiently mismatched second-harmonic coefficients can give greater loss than second-harmonic absorption in semiconductor layers.
