Physical and optical characterization of epitaxial waveguiding KNbO3 thin films grown by sputter deposition

Abstract

KNbO3 thin epitaxial films were sputter deposited onto (100) oriented spinel and MgO substrates. Waveguiding with losses as low as 1.1 dB/cm at λ=632.8 nm was achieved. The nonlinear optical coefficient d31=6.3 pm/V was determined by a Maker Fringe measurement using the 1.06 µm Nd:YAG laser fundamental wavelength.
