Abstract

Retromodulator/conjugators have potential uses in such areas as remote sensors, laser communication links, and optical data processing networks. Such devices have been demonstrated in the visible portion of the spectrum, using self-pumped conjugators employing barium titanate1,2 and atomic sodium.3 For certain guided-wave photonics requirements, operation at 1.3-μm wavelengths is needed. Recently, InP:Fe-based photorefractive devices, including self-pumped conjugators4 and double phase-conjugate mirrors,5 have been demonstrated. In the former case, an applied ac field was placed across the crystal to enhance the space-charge fields; in the latter case, an applied dc field, in conjunction with a temperature/optical intensity resonance condition, resulted in a reasonable phase- conjugate return.
