Abstract

Lasers operating at 2 μm are useful for a large variety of applications because of the strong absorption by water at this wavelength and because it is relatively eyesafe (the 2-pm wavelength is not transmitted through ocular media). Our demonstration of mode-locked pulse trains in Q-s witched modulation envelopes makes it possible to achieve both high peak powers and high pulse energies in the 2-p.m wavelength region.
