Cooperative nonlinear dynamics of the 2.8-mm pair-pumped erbium laser

Abstract

We report observations of instabilities in the output of the 2.8-µm erbium laser pumped at 1.5 µm,1 which originate with nonlinear pair interactions in the gain medium. Results are compared with observations for 650-nm pumping, reported here for the first time to our knowledge, and significant differences in behavior are shown to arise from different inversion mechanisms of these two lasers.
