Abstract

Controlling the spontaneous-emission properties of matter with a wavelength-sized cavity has received considerable interest from the standpoint of novel optical devices.1–4 Previously, we have reported the alteration of the spontaneous-emission properties of condensed matter2,3 in planar microcavity structures having wavelength-sized distances. One attractive feature of the microcavity structure is its effect on laser oscillation, i.e., zero-threshold laser operation.4,5 However, no details of the lasing oscillation properties of microcavities, such as input-output characteristics, emission spectra, and dynamic response, have been reported so far.
