Abstract
A common approach to ultrafast optical switching has been to exploit the third-order nonlinear refraction effect.1 In some applications (such as optical AND-gate), an alternative approach is to employ frequency conversion. Both processes are manifestations of the same third-order nonlinearities in many material systems.
