Abstract

The two main approaches taken previously to attain the beam smoothness necessary for direct-drive inertial confinement fusion (ICF) have been using a random phase plate1 to give a stationary, fine-scale speckle pattern at focus and a spatial incoherence to cause the speckle pattern to change in time [either induced spatial incoherence (ISI)2 or smoothing by spectral dispersion (SSD)3]. We have implemented a version of SSD on one beamline of Nova at 0.527 μm, the modeling of which is described in a separate paper.4 Using this beam, we plan to do planar target experiments on hydrodynamic instability in collaboration with the University of Rochester, Laboratory of Laser Energetics (LLE).
