Abstract

Much interest now exists in using excimer lasers as ophthalmologic tools to reshape the cornea and improve visual acuity. Ablation with the ArF (193mn) excimer laser has been shown to produce precise corneal excision with minimal collateral tissue damage. While considerable work has been devoted to the clinical application of this technology, the underlying physics of the ablation process are not yet well understood.
