Appropriate laser photoionization techniques have been applied to study metabolically important elements and isotopes. Zinc is a structural or functional component in more than 200 enzymes and enzymatic processes ranging from endocrine control to wound healing, whereas calcium is important in the control of muscles, the regulation of hormones, and in treatment of bone disorders such as osteoporosis. Investigation results will be presented on the sensitive and selective laser photoionization methods developed to permit stable isotope tracer studies of these effects.
