The highest energy, ultrashort-pulse laser systems are based on solid-state amplifying materials and chirped-pulse-amplification (CPA).1 Recently Macklin et al2 demonstrated 0.5 TW, 125 fs pulses in Ti:Al2O3. We have constructed a Ti:Al2O3 based system which uses CPA and multipass amplifiers. Pulses are produced with a peak power of 3 TW, an energy of 0.45 J and a duration of 95 fs.
