Abstract

Quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of the photon number has been a subject of much interest.1 We propose a novel scheme: the QND detection of the photon number via a coupling of photons with an electron quantum interference current in a semiconductor microstructure. The QND device requires a much shorter interaction length than those previously proposed,1 and it converts information on the photon number directly into the electric current. These properties are advantageous in future optoelectronics applications.
