The possibility of integrating a high performance GaAs photodetector with silicon circuits will allow interchip signals to be transmitted optically, thereby eliminating or at least improving such fundamental limitations as signal skew, maximum dock frequency, and pin count and allowing more flexibility to the circuit designer.
