High efficiency difference frequency mixing using tangential phase matching

Abstract

The efficiency of difference frequency mixing processes between nondiffraction- limited beams is often limited by the acceptance angle of the nonlinear interaction. This problem can sometimes be overcome by use of noncritical phase matching. We have used the more general technique of tangential phase matching in an experiment to which noncritical phase matching cannot be applied because of the very high temperature required.
