Laser relative intensity noise (RIN) is an important parameter in analog fiber optic link design.1,2 Diode pumped Nd:YAG lasers have RIN which can be difficult to quantify by conventional techniques. To measure accurately low values of RIN, a new technique is presented which requires no knowledge of the receiver's circuit noise current ic, transimpedance TZ, or effective noise bandwidth BW. It only requires accurate measurement of the average photocurrent I and the change in noise power Pn as the optical attenuation is varied.
