Abstract

The steady improvement in titanium doped sapphire as a laser material has enabled its use for single frequency cw operation and offers advantages oyer conventional dyes.1 It is broadly tunable and can efficiently convert the output of a high power ion laser. We report the development of a new stabilized single frequency electronically scannable Ti:sapphire based ring laser system which can be intracavity frequency doubled. Broadband peak output powers of 5 W and tuning from 680 to 1060 nm have been obtained with 20 W of blue green pump power from an argon-ion laser. In preliminary work, a peak output of 180 mW at 370 nm by intracayity doubling with a lithium iodate (LiIO3) crystal has been obtained. We belieye this to be the highest single frequency tunable UV output yet reported.
