Abstract

Hollow waveguides made of single crystal flexible sapphire tubing have been used to transmit CO2 laser power for laser surgical applications. The hollow sapphire waveguides have a refractive index n of <1 (n = 0.67) at 10.6 µm, and, therefore, they act as attenuated total reflectance type hollow fibers at CO2 laser wavelengths.
