Abstract

We report on the reduction of low frequency phase noise of a diode laser pumped solid state 1.32-µm Nd:YAG laser (Lightwave Electronics model 120) based on a nonplanar ring cavity1 using a reference fiber interferometer. Recent studies2 of this device have shown this type of laser to exhibit low phase noise characteristics and reasonable frequency modulation capabilities. Consequently, the device may find use in a number of areas including high resolution fiber interferometry, optical ranging, coherent optical time domain reflectometry, and coherent communication systems.
