Numerical modeling of leaky- mode diode laser arrays

Abstract

A new type of diode laser array has recently been reported1 which emits a near-diffraction-limited beam at drive currents up to 10 times threshold. These devices, denoted leaky-mode arrays due to their tendency to lase on radiation modes, show great potential as high power sources of focusable radiation. However, the modal structure and loss mechanisms of these devices are extremely complex, and a trial- and-error optimization procedure is unacceptable.
