Abstract

One of the interesting pump bands for erbium doped fiber amplifiers is the 807-nm pump band. Using GaAlAs laser diodes as pump sources, stable and low cost amplifiers can be fabricated. When using a booster amplifier, one is usually interested in high gain. The maximum gain for a single fiber amplifier is limited by the available power from the pump source. To achieve more gain one can cascade couple a number of fiber amplifiers, each pumped by one pump source.
