Static and dynamic behavior of narrowband tunable filters based on resonant amplifier structure

Abstract

Optical narrowband filters are one of the key components in a wavelength division multiplexed fiber optical network. Recently, both DFB1 and DBR2 laser diode amplifiers have been demonstrated in such a capacity with very good controllability of both filter bandwidth and center frequency. However, dynamic properties of this filter-amplifier have not been analyzed yet. We study both the static and dynamic characteristics of this active filter and simulate the device performance under either ASK or FSK input. The results are applicable to all DFB, DBR, and Fabry-Perot types of resonant amplifier.
