Coupling of semiconductor lasers to beveled single-mode fibers

Abstract

Attachment of fibers, and in particular single-mode fibers, to semiconductor lasers requires very accurate location of the fiber core with respect to the lasing spot of the laser. The usual technique of butt coupling of cleaved fibers requires fiber alignment, lateral to the beam propagation direction, to within 0.5 μm with respect to the laser beam center, to assure good coupling efficiency. Variations in fiber diameter and V-groove dimensions as well as use of adhesives introduce uncontrollable, often significant, offset in the lateral direction. The required alignment accuracy in the axial direction (along the direction of beam propagation) is in all cases less stringent than the required lateral alignment accuracy. The common method of coupling a fiber to a laser by alignment in a V-groove allows easy adjustment of the fiber position in this least critical axial direction.
