Abstract
We have previously shown1 that the gain for stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) of a given pump pulse can be significantly enhanced by prepulsing the Raman medium with another pump pulse of the same optical frequency ωp. The first pulse generates a Stokes shifted output at a frequency ωs = ωp – ωQ and a coherent excitation Q of the medium, where ωQ is the frequency of Q. Q decays slowly (nanosecond time scale) after termination of the initial pump pulse, and the second pulse can scatter off this existing Q with a resultant enhancement in gain.
