Mode-locking of a diode laser pumped Nd:glass laser by nonlinear regenerative feedback

Abstract

Active mode-locking of diode laser pumped cw Nd:glass lasers provides an attractive way for ultrashort pulse generation in the picosecond time domain.1-2 However, the shorter pulse widths compared to Nd:YAG and Nd:YLF lasers are achieved at the expense of reduced stability. This is a consequence of the fact that in AM modelocking the tolerable mismatch between cavity length and modulation frequency is inversely proportional to the gain bandwidth.2 An effective way for maintaining stable mode-locked operation is the so-called regenerative feedback technique, which allows the laser to determine its own drive frequency.
