Antiresonant nonlinear mirror for passive mode locking of solid state lasers

Abstract

Recently a number of techniques have been demonstrated which generalize the concept of the soliton laser.1 Called either additive pulse2 or coupled cavity3 lasers, these systems incorporate a nonlinear element in an external cavity which shares the output coupler with the master laser cavity. This complex feedback at the output coupler returns a shorter pulse to the cavity, resulting in passive mode locking of the laser. The difficulty in the technique is that the proper phase relationship must be maintained between the pulse circulating in the cavity and the pulse returning from the external nonlinear cavity.
