Continuous-wave dye laser operation at λ 372 nm using new dye/solvent combinations

Abstract

The higher UV output power available from the current generation of Ar-ion lasers has stimulated a search for improved blue and UV dye laser systems. A variety of dyes are available for pulsed operation in the UV spectral region. However, until recently, only polyphenyl 11,2 had sufficient solubility in ethylene glycol for use in a cw laser. We have now developed several new UV dye materials and have identified two new solvents, designated PPH and EPH, in which these and other dyes are soluble. Both EPH and PPH have physical properties suitable for use in jet stream dye lasers. They exhibit low toxicity.
