Hyperfine structure and isotope shift measurements of uranium were preformed in a normal atomic beam device using a tunable laser with narrow linewidth.1 For measuring the high lying levels, it is necessary to use a pulsed laser with broad linewidth to populate all the hyperfine structures on the first excited level and then using a second tunable laser with narrow linewidth to scan the hyperfine structure on the second excited level.2 After measurement, one has to identify these transitions and try to find four constants, A and B for each J level, that fit the numerous measured values. Recently, an absorption line narrowing technique was used to measure the hyperfine structure in highly excited levels of yttrium,3 We extended this technique to uranium.
