Optical instrumentation to measure the size of aerosol particulates relies on the Mie scattering theory and its spherical approximation to quantify the measurement. This work tests the spherical approximation on particulates 30 μm and larger which are nonspherical and representative of process streams carrying dust and ash. A technique has been developed to image the intensity of the forward scattered light from single particles.
