Abstract

Crystalline lanthanum neodymium pentaphosphates are commonly considered as the best laser stoichiometric media known. Recently they have also been obtained in a glassy state.1–3 Spatial disorder of active ions in the glassy state of pentaphosphates results, of course, in the intensification of concentration quenching phenomena and, therefore, the deterioration of the luminescence properties, i.e., quantum yield, decay time, and width of the spectral lines. On the other hand, glassy pentaphosphates exhibit some specific advantages.
