Abstract

The development of high power laser transmitters is of central importance for applications in free-space communication where higher power permits reduction in aperture size and increase in system capacity. Recent advances in diode laser array technology now permit output powers in excess of 1-2 W to be generated by commercially available devices. However, these devices typically operate in multiple spatial and spectral modes and thus are unsuitable for application to coherent communications.
