Abstract
We present a theory of the soliton laser1–3 which examines how the optical fiber enables a laser to produce shorter pulses than is otherwise possible. First, we discuss a model of the laser cavity in which the lasing medium is inhomogeneously broadened, and the mode-locking mechanism is only effective over a small fraction of the available gain bandwidth.
