Abstract
For digital PCM modulation, especially at high frequencies, it is important to suppress frequency chirp. For analog applications, tight control of harmonic distortion is required. With a distributed feedback GRIN-rod external coupled-cavity DFB-GRECC1 InGaAsP laser modulated at 3 GHz and 50% modulation depth, we achieved a threefold reduction of frequency chirp and a suppression of 10 dB of harmonic distortion. Compared with other chirp-reduction schemes,2 this configuration is relatively simple, compact in design, and compatible with present laser packaging.
