Abstract

Recent progress in colliding pulse mode-locked (CPM) dye laser systems has shown that it is absolutely indispensable to control the group velocity dispersion (GVD) in the laser cavity to obtain stable trains of nearly bandwidth-limited femtosecond pulses.1,2 So far the most successful approach in this direction has been a four-prism configuration used by Valdmanis et al,1 who were able to generate transform-limited pulses of only 27-fs duration. We report here on the applicability of thin-film Gires-Tournois interferometers3 (GTIs), which can be used for the compression of chirped femtosecond pulses4 as well as for intracavity chirp compensation in a CPM laser.2
