Abstract

Design considerations, the actual hardware development, and the performance evaluation of a cw CO2 waveguide laser with a tuning range of 1.4 GHz are presented. The laser has been developed as a local oscillator for a CO2 laser intersatellite laser data link under development for the European Space Agency ESA. It is also of interest for other applications as well, e.g., remote sensing (as a local oscillator of pulsed systems, as an injection-locking source for TEA lasers, or in heterodyne radiometers), in spectroscopy, or (with modifications) to pump far-IR lasers.
