Continuously rf-excited CO2 waveguide laser with self-focusing parallel-plate guide

Abstract

In a conventional sealed waveguide gas laser, the containment of the amplifying medium inside the guide strongly impedes renewing the mixture. To make gas circulation easier, we built a nonjoining self-focusing parallel-plate guide. These plates are of aluminum, and a rf discharge is induced through them (Fig. 1). The shape of the electrodes with respect to that of the plates was calculated to ensure a uniform excitation of the enclosed gas mixture. As shown in Fig. 1, the guide, bonded to the electrodes, is maintained in close contact with a cooled copper block. The box supporting the cavity mirrors acts as a gas mixture reservoir.
