Abstract
In this contribution we analyze the situation of light diffraction by photoinduced gratings in anisotropic materials. It is shown that the Bragg condition requires a careful match between gratings and incident and diffracted wave vectors and that the incident and diffraction angles are generally different because of the different refractive indices for the incident and diffracted waves with polarization directions normal to each other. This situation is shown to be analogous to the case of anisotropic Bragg diffraction by elastooptic gratings induced by the strain of ultrasonic shear waves.
